Central Asia has historically been characterized by its nomadic peoples and by the Silk Road.

At the crossroads between East and West, the region has witnessed ancient empires with rich cultures and traditions that still endure today.

Destinations of Central Asia

The history of Central Asia has been conditioned mainly by the climate and geography of the area. The aridity of the region makes it difficult to practice agriculture, being a land dominated for centuries by the nomadic peoples of the steppe, mainly dependent on pastoralism. The region covers an area of about 4 million square kilometers, and with 75 million inhabitants is one of the least populated regions in the world.

Likewise, the Silk Road, which existed between the 2nd century B.C. and the 15th century, commercially connected the West with the East and traced its way through these lands, leaving a deep imprint on its people. Proof of this are its splendid cities, which served as stops for travelers on the Silk Road.

Although steppe predominates, this region offers a wide variety of physical features, containing some of the highest mountain ranges in the world along with some of the most notable depressions, such as those in the northeastern Caspian Sea. The climate also presents opposite extremes, typical of steppe regions.

However, its tourist attractions capture the richness of its cultural heritage and natural beauty. The historic cities of Samarkand, Bukhara and Khiva in Uzbekistan, all former stops on the Silk Road, are home to some of the most impressive Islamic architecture in the world, with their madrasas, mausoleums and exquisitely decorated palaces.

While Ala Archa National Park in Kyrgyzstan and Lake Issyk-Kul, surrounded by snow-capped mountains, offer spectacular natural scenery for lovers of adventure and tranquility. Amidst these treasures, one can find communities of nomads, whose hospitality and traditional ways of life add a unique dimension to the travel experience in Central Asia.

Emerging from the ruins of the former USSR, the region is slowly opening up to tourism, thanks mainly to its spectacular natural landscapes and some of the most incredible sites on our planet. In addition, being one of the least developed tourist areas, it houses unique stories, deep-rooted traditions, and true hidden gems that are worth discovering.
