Located northeast of the territory, in the Costa Rican Caribbean, the Tortuguero National Park is one of the main tourist icons of the country. Tortuguero National Park is a paradise for research and ecotourism. Its ecological importance includes the protection of various species, some of them in danger of extinction. Its beaches are used for spawning by 4 species of sea turtles: Green (Chelonia mydas), Leatherback (Dermochelys coriacea), Carey (Eretmochelys imbricata), Cabezona (Caretta caretta), being one of the unique places in the world due to its importance. It is also home to the manatee (Trichechus manatus), which is one of the rarest and most endangered mammals in Costa Rica.
The park is internationally recognized for being the land of turtles and wetlands. Its ecosystem is so complex and diverse thanks to the conservation policies that have been developed in it, having gradually expanded since its declaration in 1970 to reach the current 77,000 hectares, two thirds of which are exclusively marine.
