The small mosque of Al Badiyah, architectural and historical jewel of the Emirates

The Al-Badiyah Mosque, also known as the Ottoman Mosque, is one of the oldest mosques in the United Arab Emirates. It is located in the Emirate of Fujairah, in the northeast of the country. It was built in the mid-15th century and is considered an important historical site. Despite its age, the mosque is still an active place of worship today.

It is a small structure of square area, without minarets, consisting of a single hall with a central dome and four smaller domes. It is built entirely of local materials, mainly stone and mud brick covered with whitewashed plaster.

This beautiful mosque is distinguished from other mosques by having four domes that are not equal in size. Each dome is in turn composed of several domes mounted on top of each other. The first forms the base of the large dome, the second dome, smaller, and the third, much smaller, are topped by another dome.

The four domes, with a squat helical structure, are supported by a single centrally placed pillar that also forms the roof in a unique engineering system. Its architectural style stands out, for which it is also known as the Ottoman Mosque, keeping it exactly as it was initially built, without undergoing any alteration.

With an original architectural style, this small 15th century mosque is an important historical tourist attraction in the country, maintaining through the centuries its structure, design and daily prayers.

The small Al Badiyah mosque is one of the oldest sites in the Emirates.

The prayer hall has a small mihrab (niche indicating the direction of Mecca), a minbar (pulpit), arches and openings. A central pillar divides the interior space into four squares of similar dimensions. The pillar supports the four domes that can be seen from the outside.

Simply decorated with plastered walls, the walls feature carved spaces where copies of the Koran and other books are stored. The interior decoration is notable for the simple geometric designs of the domes and the minbar, which is made of stones and coral blocks.

It is a popular tourist site due to its historical significance and unique architectural beauty, being investigated by the Fujairah Archaeological Centre in cooperation with the University of Sydney in the late 1990s, where its antiquity was concluded.

It is also close to the Al Hayl Castle, dating from the same period as the mosque. It was the oldest mosque in the country until the discovery in 2018 of the ruins of a mosque about a thousand years old in the city of Al Ain, dating from the Islamic Golden Age.
